Mindfulness for Well-Being: Mindfulness-based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT)


Mindfulness trains one to focus on what is happening in the here and now with intention and openness to experience. This heightening of the awareness of the nature of our mind over time allows one to develop greater freedom to respond intentionally rather than reacting automatically to life.  Research has increasingly demonstrated the effectiveness of mindfulness training in supporting well-being, and in reducing stress and burnout. Participants specifically reported improved levels of mindfulness, psychological well-being, self-compassion, reduced levels of perceived stress, job burnout and stress, and greater satisfaction with life.

Mindfulness-based Cognitive Therapy (MBCT) integrates mindfulness meditation techniques with elements of cognitive therapy. It is one of the most widely researched evidence based course in mindfulness. MBCT forms the foundation for anyone wishing to explore patterns that keep them stuck, and be in touch with deeper contentment and freedom. The course helps people explore mind habits, be more aware of the body and have access to choice. Studies of depression report a high recurrence rate. Randomized controlled clinical trials have demonstrated the effectiveness of MBCT in reducing the likelihood of relapse by about 40-50% in people who have suffered 3 or more previous episodes of depression. In the UK, MBCT has also been integrated into mainstream healthcare system. It has also been found to support well-being in those with anxiety symptoms and other health issues or chronic stress. Based on the structure of MBCT, programs have been implemented in schools, workplaces and even to parliamentary members and staff. In addition, for those interest in becoming mindfulness facilitators at some point, this course can importantly form the first step towards the teacher’s pathway.

The 5-day MBCT intensive will offer participants an opportunity to experience this evidence-based approach for themselves. Participants are then encouraged to continue practice unfolding it over 8-weeks at their own pace.
