Description

For too long, society has viewed people with developmental disabilities as either sexually naïve or sexually deviant. If they appear naïve or innocent, it's because they haven’t been given the information and skills they need to be sexually safe. If they appear sexually deviant, it's because they haven't been taught about modesty and privacy and they haven’t been allowed to express their sexuality in healthy ways.

All persons, regardless of abilities, need access to quality sexuality and relationship education so that they may be sexually safe and healthy adults.

Participants will be provided with the background information necessary for understanding human sexuality and how it is an integral part of who we are as human beings. Participants will then look at approaches and activities they can use to cover specific topics. Finally, participants will learn how to respond calmly and correctly to sexual questions, comments, and behaviours.

Key Areas 

  • Part 1: Acknowledge and address the discomfort and embarrassment that often goes along with the subject matter
  • Part 2: Provide the background information necessary for understanding human sexuality
  • Part 3: Provide practical strategies for addressing sexuality concerns

 

Learning Outcomes

  By the end of the programme, participants will be able to: 

  • Grasp the complexities of sexual anatomy and human sexuality. They will recognise the stages of sexual development from birth through adulthood, and how and why sexual development is affected by developmental disabilities.
  • Recognise how their own personal beliefs and attitudes can affect their ability to discuss sexuality and relationships with their students/clients. They will take the necessary steps to keep their personal beliefs and attitudes in check when they enter the workplace.
  • React appropriately when a student/client discloses sexual abuse. They will also use concrete strategies to help prevent sexual abuse from happening in the first place.
  • Recognise that a comprehensive approach to sexuality and relationship education is necessary in order to give students/clients the information and skills they need to be sexually healthy adults.
  • Use effective strategies for teaching human sexuality topics.
  • Respond appropriately to the sexual questions, comments, and behaviours of their students/clients.
